Mass Effect movie will not suck, says screenwriter Mark Protosevich

According to screenwriter Mark Protosevich, who is working on the project, the Mass Effect movie currently in development has something other video game movies did not: a good story.

Past video game movies, says Protosevich, have focused on action sequences and pretty visuals. But action scenes that work well in video games do not necessarily translate well to the big screen. “In the early days, the idea was, let’s try to recreate this, instead of pausing and asking is this a good story,” Kotaku quotes Mark Protosevich. “Does it have interesting concepts, does it have interesting philosophies and themes? I think most games fail that test.”

Mass Effect, he says, does not. Although little is still known about the movie, it is dated for release sometime in 2012, and promises to be more than eye candy. According to Gamespot, the film will focus on the first game in the series.

With a story and world that have such depth, there’s no way a movie can mess it up. Right?
