Electronic Arts seem to be pretty pleased with the new Need For Speed. As well they might be, given on top of a raft of glowing reviews the demo alone apparently saw over 2 million downloads.
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit comes as part of Burnout developer Criterion’s attempt to relaunch the franchise with a more back-to-basics approach – no daft story, no millions of car parts, just cops and supercars, the way the first few games used to be before Underground came along. Seems to be doing quite well so far.
The demo didn’t make my heart go pitter-pat or anything, but I did think it was a tremendously polished piece of work and a very confident attempt to go back to the old games’ design. I’m sure it’ll have its fans, but it’ll be interesting to see if NFS can still keep its place up the Christmas sales charts without all the pink neon and outsize spoilers.
