Hyper Light Drifter: drifting through Kickstarter, Greenlight and beyond

Hyper Light Drifter is a pixelated action RPG currently enjoying a more than successful Kickstarter campaign that’s seen it confirmed for PS4 and Vita release, and is now also on Greenlight.

Heart Machine’s Hyper Light Drifter is a sprawling Zelda-come-Diablo-come-Bastion, beautifully crafted, neon-infused roguelike adventure, which smashed its Kickstarter goal – along with three further Stretch Goals – in just 24 hours of the project’s activation.

Now, with two and half weeks still on the clock, Hyper Light Drifter has just surpassed $290’000 – 1077% of its original $27’000 total.

Closing in on $300’000, the campaign has its sights locked on a new added developer to “boulster production” as its next Stretch Goal. So far, a physical art book, extended cinematics and PS4 and PS Vita versions of the game have all been unlocked.

“Visions for this game have been fluttering in my skull for ages; something dark and fantastic, with giant forests to navigate, huge floating structures to explore, deep crumbling ruins to loot, massive throngs of enemies to rend, and behemoths both flesh and mechanical to overcome,” reads Alex Preston’s (the game’s lead designer) blurb on the game’s Greenlight page. “I want it all to be as beautiful as possible, forging color with the dark and eerie wastes and intimidating landscapes. It plays like the best parts of A Link to the Past and Diablo, evolved: lightning fast combat, more mobility, an array of tactical options, more numerous and intelligent enemies, and a larger world with a twisted past to do it all in.”

Although relatively new to the game development scene, Heart Machine’s Alex Preston has friend Beau Blyth – the man behind Samurai Gunn – working alongside him as lead programmer, not to mention Fez composer Rich Vreeland.

Hyper Light Drifter is now also on Greenlight. If the Kickstarter response is anything to go by, it won’t sit there for very long.
