Rockstar warns against installing GTA V “play” disc on Xbox 360

Rockstar Games says that for “optimal performance,” Xbox 360 owners should only install GTA V’s “install” disc and not the “play” disc.

It’s finally here. Rockstar Games’ magnum opus that is GTA V has finally been released to the world. The game is so big that it requires a one-time installation, but make sure that the disc that you’re installing isn’t the “play” disc on the Xbox 360.

With the Xbox 360 version of GTA V shipping on two discs — one for installing the game and the other one for playing the game — you might think that installing both discs is the way to go, but it’s not.

“For optimal performance, we recommend only installing the Install Disc, and not also installing the Play Disc to the Xbox 360 Hard Drive or USB drive via Xbox Home (dashboard),” writes Rockstar Games on their GTA V installation support page.

So only install the install disc(!), which, according to Rockstar, is 8GB.

Meanwhile, the PS3 version of GTA V will ship on just one disc (Blu-ray sure is great) and will start installing once you insert the game.

To see why you shouldn’t install GTA V’s “play” disc on the Xbox 360, you can head over to Digital Foundry, which offers an explanation and a handy comparison video.
