Red Barrels’ first release is nearly here as they announce that their first person survival horror game Outlast is coming this September for PC, but with no mention of PS3 or PS4 releases.
Joining alongside the sudden surge of non-combat focused survival horror games is Outlast. It is a game that BeefJack’s Joe Donnelly saw at E3 and despite his innate pessimism he admitted that the games sight and sounds, “both were very convincing“. What I find interesting, is that he played it on a PS4 at E3 and now we have a press release detailing the PC release, but with no mention of a PS3 or PS4 release. Regardless, the PC release of Outlast is coming this September and on all of the usual digital distribution platforms.
This horror game takes a first person approach that is inspired by Amnesia, especially move-able environmental objects and the focus on surviving, not fighting, but it uses a video camera to create a distinct look that I can’t help but relate to REC (Quarantine for those in NA). It all takes place in an Asylum that is overrun with monsters, fresh corpses and some fear inspiring environments. It is being made by Red Barrels, which is made up of industry veterans who have worked on Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted and many others, and it is their first release.
Today Red Barrels’ announced that Outlast will be coming out on September 4th for PC and seemingly only on Steam. To get a decent look at the game, here is the most recent trailer that they have put up. Check back later for more news on Outlast and hopefully some news about if and when it is going to release on other platforms.
