American McGee has some questions for you.
In a post on his Facebook yesterday, American McGee had some questions for fans of the Alice series. If he could get the rights to Alice from EA, would you play Alice 3? And if you would play Alice 3, would you back it on Kickstarter?
“If you said “yes” to those two things, make some noise,” read McGee’s post. With GDC coming up in two weeks, McGee says that the more interest shown in Alice 3 by fans, the more EA will take him seriously when discussing the possibility of an Alice 3, a game that he’s been planning but is “completely out of his control” due to EA’s ownership of the IP.
McGee has some experience dealing with Kickstarter, having recently found success for Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, and Kickstarter certainly seems to be the way for fans to get sequels to games (and even television series) that wouldn’t have gotten one otherwise.
While McGee is speaking purely hypothetically, an Alice 3 Kickstarter does make you wonder. With McGee’s recent move towards F2P PC titles rather than traditional console games, one has to wonder where Alice 3 would fit in. Most Kickstarter games find life on PC digital distribution and mobile platforms because the fees and work associated with getting them on consoles are usually much greater than an independent developer can afford.
Alice is a popular series and I wouldn’t be surprised if it found success on Kickstarter as a digital download PC title – that’s sort of the direction many games are moving in. Should McGee’s talks with EA go anywhere, we’ll be sure to keep you up to date.
