News: CCP’s Jonathan Lander says the company has a 5-year plan for its ambitious project Dust 514, and enough ideas to last another 20 years of development.
Everyone is waiting to see whether Dust 514 will succeed in unifying EVE Online with its sister console FPS. But CCP is apparently not as worried, and has plenty of ideas for Dust. EVE Online executive producer Jonathan Lander told GamesIndustry that the company has “a five-year road map with a whole load of things we’d love to put into Dust.” But that’s not all: “We’ve got crazy ideas that will take us through another 20 years of development.”
CCP plans on publishing expansions regularly, and often. “We’re not going to ship a unit and then in six months it’s off the shelves and people have stopped playing it,” said Lander. Dust 514 is a PS3 exclusive, and currently Sony is only planning to keep supporting the PS3 for two or three years. This doesn’t deter Lander or CCP: “We’re working really, really hard with Sony right now on PlayStation 3 and just shipping the game on PlayStation 3, that’s where 100 per cent of our focus is. But our intention is this game will continue to run and operate for many, many years.”
Maybe part of the optimism stems from CCP’s home. Lander points out: “If you’ve ever lived in the winter in Iceland you’ll probably realise that they believe that they can do anything, absolutely anything.”
