Just Cause movie an origin story, 3rd game on the way

Just Cause the movie, subtitled Scorpio Rising, is taking the old Hollywood route of a prequel.

Announced in October last year, more details¬† have started to appear through Hollywood Reporter about Just Cause: Scorpio Rising. The movie is apparently telling the origin story of the series’ protagonist Rico Rodriguez aka Scorpio.

Production is underway by Eric Eisner’s L+E Pictures with producer Adrian Askarieh attached. Askarieh¬† helped bring Hitman to the screen in the past. Personally not a bad thing, but I know the popular opinion is against me on that film. Bryan Edward Hill is doing the second draft of the script. This will be Hill’s second film, his previous being a Dolph Lundgren film, The Mechanik, in 2005. He’s also done some work for DC and Top Cow comics.

The prequel direction makes sense. The Just Cause games take place once Rico is already an established member of The Agency and aren’t exactly known for their strong story telling. They certainly give the film makers plenty of latitude to work a story of their own.

The report also seems to confirm the rumours of the third Just Cause being in development at Avalanche Studios. Previously it was reported that it could be out in 2012.

So is this yet another Hollywood video game disaster waiting to happen or could this be the one that finally gets it right?

I totally love Just Cause 2 but why bother with a movie? There is nothing of interest in the main character or the world he occupies (by occupies I mean blows up). It will end up being a low budget Latin Bond clone. Also if the film doesn’t consist of 96 minutes of Rico trying to drop a jeep full of C4 on a generals head while surfing a jumbo jet it will not be in true spirit of the game :P
